How To Inspire Someone You Love To Take Action On Their Health

Motivational Mondays…

This is something that keeps on cropping up in conversation, particularly among fellow health coaches and nutritionists (and people in general who take a really conscious approach to their health) – the frustration of getting a loved one to make some simple changes that we know will only make their lives infinitely better.

We’ve all felt this frustration; ‘Why won’t they just do x, y or z? It’s so frigging simple!!’ “It’s just so obvious.” And we find ourselves saying things like: “They clearly don’t care about their health.” It can be heart breaking to see people we love unwittingly abuse their bodies. I’ve often just resorted to thinking something along the lines of “The best I can do is love them, and only they can make the changes necessary….you can take a horse to water but you can’t make them drink it blah blah blah.”

I’ve come to think that way of thinking is a bit feeble. I believe we can influence. There are ways to inspire and I believe it starts with understanding what they want, why they want it, and what is holding them back. Ok, that’s the easy part. The challenge comes from the fact they they’ll have been subjected to decades of societal conditioning on the part of media (TV, radio, newspapers, the news), limitless advertising budgets of big food corporations and unethical practices and endless advertising on the part of pharmaceutical companies… “Ask Your Doctor For This Drug” if you’re in America. I cannot believe that is allowed to exist. It’s criminal in my opinion. Not to mention the influence they have on our governments and the “health care” industry (except I just have). I put that in quotes as it has very little to do with health – we live in a disease and symptoms maintenance culture. There is nothing in our health care system about how to really care for your health and heal your body.

Ultimately, we have been conditioned to not take full responsibility for our health. We have been conditioned unconscious. We have been conditioned to give away our power to heal our bodies, to people who are not qualified to heal our bodies.

We all have the innate ability to heal ourselves but we have been conditioned to go to the doctor when something is wrong, and we have this engrained expectation to be given a drug to hide some form of pain or cover up a symptom of an illness. Doctors are not trained to heal us. This is a fact. This is not me trying to be some kind of conspiracy theorist or discredit doctors. You’ll discover why during a 6-year degree they receive just a few hours of training in nutrition and why the majority of their course material is steered towards prescription drugs that NEVER treat the root cause. This is a cold hard FACT. And every single drug comes with side effects. Every single drug is a toxin in your body. Every single drug attacks the liver. Every single drug causes an imbalance in your body. Your body cannot be in balance if you regularly take a prescription drug. And that includes birth control drugs that many girls and women take thinking they’re perfectly safe.

So back to the conundrum of influencing those we love to take action. They’ll have been subjected to decades (depending on how old they are of course) of unethical conditioning and more than likely, won’t have invested much time or energy in doing their own research. They’ll have probably trusted what they have seen in the news (which is so often scarily wrong – do you know what triggered the obesity epidemic and diabetes epidemic? The low fat craze of the early 80’s) and what their mother told them and trusting whoever puts food on their plate without giving it much further thought.

So how do you get around this conditioning? How can you help someone rewire their brain so they can see they have been misinformed for so many years, which will empower them to take action? No one wants to admit they’re wrong about something – especially for that many years. No one wants to admit that chronic disease is self-created. (According to the founder of Cross Fit, Greg Glassman, 70% of all deaths are down to chronic disease. Chronic diseases are all self-created. That’s hard to swallow for most people. It’a hard to accept that diseases like cancer are merely a symptom of toxicity in the body. Dis-ease is a symptom of imbalance in the body.) No one wants to admit they have unwittingly sabotaged their own health.

Here’s how I suggest your approach:

  1. Education & Awareness
    1. It’s not their fault. They have been misinformed for many years.
    2. Understand the history of the medical industry – I believe this is necessary to provide a wake up call so they know they must take full control of their health and take all necessary action.
    3. All the education for true health and vitality and reversing illnesses is readily available online and in books. It just requires an investment of time and a tiny amount of money. Invest now or pay later.
    4. Suggest 15-30 minutes of reading every day in nutrition and health: The Vitality Secret is a great start 🙂
    5. Ignore the media. There is a big difference between what is what is conventionally “healthy” and what is actually healthy.
  2. Empowerment
    1. Empower them to get crystal clear on their vision of what they want and WHY they want to it. See this article about how to do that. Nothing is more powerful than becoming completely in tune with your ‘why’ and aligning it with your innate needs and desires – family, children, love, sex, finances and safety etc. I really believe the main reason people neglect their health is down to falling out of tune with their ‘why’. (And possibly a lack of self-love.) And it takes some conscious effort to get realigned with it. It requires pen to paper and creating new thought patterns and belief systems. That exercise helps with that.
    2. Empower them to take 100% responsibility for their health and full ownership of their body.
      1. Be rid of blame and a ‘victim’ mentality. This is a lot easier said than done and might involve some kind of emotional intelligence and/or transformational training. A victim mentality only holds the blamer back from who they ultimately are. (I did a lot of work on this in another area of my life…I’m only too familiar. They might have a very good reason to hold blame but it immobilises them and withdraws one’s power to act.
      2. Understand doctors are not trained to heal and only we can do that. Only we can be our own best doctor. Let doctors be for emergencies only.
    3. Self-love. With no self-love, there is no self-care. Without self-love, we do not put in the effort to research, invest and take action on nourishing our bodies and moving and strengthening them regularly. Without self-love, we will not take regular blood tests to monitor our health. (What gets measured gets managed, and this is the only way to monitor the true state of our health. A C-Reactive Protein test, for example, is a leading indicator for inflammatory markers in your body – the root of almost every common illness and chronic disease and accelerated aging.) Without self-love, we seek instant gratification with comfort eating which normally involves toxic and sugary foods, that lead to long-term pain and suffering and disease.
  3. Eradication
    1. Do away with common, inflammatory illnesses, like IBS, eczema, asthma, psoriasis, Crohn’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis by understanding how certain foods are highly toxic in your body. Every inflammatory condition can be reversed and/or managed without any medication. And this counts for the majority of illnesses and disease. AND faster ageing.

To conclude I really believe first secret to vitality is about taking full ownership of your body and doing away with past conditioning. The mechanics are actually fairly simple. The psychology is the fascinating part.

I believe in order to take full responsibility for our health and full ownership of our bodies we must love our own bodies. And if we’re trying to influence someone who doesn’t love themselves, this is probably where most attention needs to be invested. As corny as it sounds, we must have self-love. We must respect our bodies. We need to make our health our #1 priority before anything else. Tony Robbins uses the analogy of the oxygen masks on planes. In the event of a crash, we are instructed not to put them on our children first, but on ourselves first, and then our children. If we don’t take care of our bodies, our children will suffer. It might not be obvious at first, but what we do with our bodies affects those we love; what we put in our bodies, how we move our bodies, how we manage our emotions, stress etc, impacts those we care most about.

If we’re in a poor state of physical health, we’re low on energy, we’re stressed, we’re overweight, and we’re dragging our heels to stay alive. This affects everything else we do in life. We’re in survival mode, doggy paddling to stay above water.

When we’re in a peak state of health and vitality, we show up the best we can for everyone around us and we can do so much more in the beautiful world in which we live.
