This is part two of a juicing explanation I began to explain yesterday after my return from Glastonbury Music Festival here in the UK, which meant lots of cider was consumed, and not a great deal of nutrients! I thought a 2-3 day juice cleanse would be an excellent way to reboot and 1 day in I’m already feeling pretty chipper and shedding a few pounds of fat I gained from all that cider.

In this video I explain a little about nutritional ketosis – this is when our body burns fat for energy (both mentally and physically) rather than carbohydrates that we tend to do in the modern way of living. Typically, we’re consuming way too many carbs and sugar which is why there’s an obesity epidemic and has also contributed to a decline in testosterone levels. This is largely because the more fat you store, the more oestrogen you have circulating in your body, and the more oestrogen you have, the less testosterone you have. This is due to belly fat containing the enzyme aromatase, which converts testosterone into two forms of oestrogen. All rather complicated, yet straight forward at the same time once you get your head around it!

Ketosis

Ketosis is a state at which the body has an extremely high fat-burning rate. Even the brain runs on fat, via ketone bodies. These are energy molecules in the blood (like blood sugar) which become fuel for our brains after being converted from fat by the liver.

To encourage ketone production, the amount of insulin in your bloodstream must be low. The lower your insulin, the higher your ketone production. And when you have a well-controlled, sufficiently large amount of ketones in your blood, it’s basically proof that your insulin is very low – and therefore, that you’re enjoying the maximum effect of your low-carbohydrate diet. That’s what’s called optimal ketosis.
