The Magic Pill Documentary – My Notes

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, (who does that?), you’ll have heard about the Ketogenic diet. It’s becoming increasingly popular due to its anti-inflammatory powers and rapid fat burning effects. It’s also in my book, The Vitality Secret, my award-winning online program and something I often support my clients with. Be warned – it’s not for everyone, and vegans are not fans! Personally, I don’t think it’s sustainable as it is limiting, although I do know people who live this way year on year with healthy blood levels.

Simply put, the ketogenic diet is when you switch to a majority fat-loaded diet (70-80%), around 10-15% protein, and about 10% carbohydrates. When you limit the carbohydrates, your liver produces ketones – used for energy throughout your body. Many report a surge in brain performance as well as fast, and effortless fat burning – once you’ve transitioned into ketosis which can take 3-5 days, maybe longer. The transition can be a little challenging!

This documentary features one of my favourite people and author of Grain Brain, Dr David Perlmutter and the author of Wheat Belly, Dr William Davis. They both feature in my book (which I’m currently revising with massive emphasis on epigenetics and the energy body. Look out for it!)

A number of people with various illnesses were taken through the ketogenic diet for the treatment of celiac, obesity, pre-diabetes, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, autism, ADHD and behavioural challenges.

  • In the early 80s, fat was demonised and reported to cause heart disease. Fat was replaced with sugar.
  • The Western World went “healthy whole grain,”  fat free, low fat – it led to a disaster
  • Natural fats replaced with hydrogenated oils – poison
  • Food test: Did the food grow on the planet? Did it run / swim or grow? If no, it’s not food
  • The method
    • Choose organic
    • Eliminate grains and legumes
    • Load up on fats – logic oil / coconut oil / avocados /
    • Naturally raised animals / pasture-raised
    • Bone broths
    • Organ meats
    • Fermented foods
    • Fast intermittently
    • Plenty of Leafy Green Vegetables
    • Leafy greens and veggies
  • Fat fuels the mitochondria (energy component of our cells)
  • Brains thrive in fat burning environment
  • Kids lifestyle changed after a couple of weeks or horror
  • Autism Spectrum: Mother was told to put her kid on carb diet
  • Honolulu – Brain disorders / Autism / ADHD
    • Study on how the ketogenic diet helps children with autism
    • Huge benefits in Autism / interaction / loving interactions / self-care skill
    • ADOS score (Autism score) was brought down considerably
    • Good for brain cells, muscle, pancreas
  • This is an old thought – thousands of years old, about how fat fuels every cell in the body

Why do we fear fat?

  • “Saturated fats causes cholesterol and heart disease”
  • The tiny little acorn that turned into the giant obesity/diabetes epidemic
  • 1 study by Ancel Keys – 7 country study, 130,000 men, diet, cholesterol
    • Study showed low saturated fat was associated with low rates of heart disease
    • Doesn’t mean that it was a cause – same study revealed very little sugar
  • After billions of dollars of research, Ancel Keys hypothesis could not be proven
  • Tim Noakes – few scientists in the world with A1 rating was charged for not adhering to his Dietician guidelines, putting someone on a high fat diet
    • Charge against Dietetics association – in South Africa
    • Unique event – scientist has been charged by providing unconventional advice – namely, high fat
  • Obesity / dementia / insulin resistance / heart disease – wants to prove that diet has had a major impact
  • Low Fat National Institute of Health – $700m invested – set out to prove low fat was a better way to live – after 8 years, the low fat diet did not prove effective
  • Animal fats down / eggs down / whole milk down
  • Grains up 41%
  • What’s wrong the Guideline? Women with diabetes got worse
  • American Heart Association / National Institute For Health / Grain Industry / Monsanto – the ‘powers that be’ who had vested interests had to suppress findings
  • Low carb high fat pyramid is the correct way, not a diet loaded with grains and sugar
  • Kids with behavioural problems: kids showed a market improvement
  • Survival foods for people just starting out on ketosis – macadamia bread
  • Sugar-free chocolate – Yum
  • Hyperinsulinemia – cardiovascular disease / cancer / Alzheimer’s
  • Cancer patient reported breast cancer
  • Cancer cells have an Achilles heal – oxygen
  • Cancer cells need sugar and refined carbohydrate to thrive
  • 80% healthy fats, 10-12% protein, and no more than 12 grams carbs – can help to starve cancer cells to death (since the fuels have been removed)
  • Breast tumour shrank / complete reversal
  • Doctor office “our miracle patient has arrived” – hard science
  • Cancer as a metabolic disease – This is a study dating back to Otto Warburg
  • Scientific Study Changes the picture
  • No matter how you target cancer therapies, most cancers treated with cocktail of drugs that fail
  • Cancer cells depend on glucose as source of fuel. It can therefore lend itself to metabolic approach. It may not be the case in all cancers, but it work for many
  • All diseases are the same problem; heart disease / cancer / high blood pressure / diabetes
  • 70% of what is practiced in modern medicine is all linked back to diet
  • Insulin resistance is when body is not responding to insulin. Body has to secrete more and more insulin for body to receive insulin. “The idea to give type-2 diabetes more insulin is completely insane.”
  • One woman was suffering from type-2 diabetics, and it affects every system in the body; neuropathy / gastro paresis / early dines disease, arteries throughout the body are affected
  • Within a month on ketosis, insulin was halved
  • Depression…alleviated with ketosis (fat is brain fuel)
  • Concentration camp food – flour, aboriginal, fried bread…
  • Rations being brought in by missionaries – tobacco / sugar / flour
  • South Africa
    • Maize – in impoverished rural communities. South African gov decided to produce Maize on industrial scale. It’s all GMO. Refined. – It may as well be a bowl full of sugar. It was the introduction of Maize
  • Multinationals behind the donations
  • The industry completely controlled which information came out to the public
  • It’s not an accident that everyone is hooked on the processed garbage
  • The whole food system needs changing
  • Industry will fun studies designed to confused the public – scientific studies influenced by powers
  • 2008 Randomised Controlled Trial (raised the money himself) – high fat keto diet, Abdominal fat, triglycerides – key markers favourable high fat means HDL goes up (“good cholesterol”) – the very particles that help, all blood markers improved
  • Saturated fatty acids in blood stream – all markers for health were favourable in keto
  • It’s expensive to eat healthily
  • Grain-feeding of animals, what do grains do to cattle? They fatten them up – we can take the hint there (let’s stop loading up on grains)
  • 97% of meat is produced in food lots (intense inhumane farming)
  • Misleading information in media – it’s about rebuilding systems, that should be our focus
  • Interviewed a vegan – reduce carbon foot print, grow your own food – discovered bone meal / animal meal so she could grow her own vegetables. Realised the soil needed animal remains – it’s part of the echo system.
  • The most destructive things we’ve done is altered agriculture – soy/grain-fed animals
  • Organic / pasture raises is not NOT sustainable, it’s regenerative
  • When grass is allowed to be productive as it is supposed to be – soil and grass regenerates and carbon is written off – if all industrial sites were eliminated, land would be back to normal in 10 years
  • The human body is complex, and how we fuel it can be simple
  • It we go with the notion that fat is fuel, the dominos fall into place

South African – all disease treat the same condition.

  • Doctors / nurses all trained to tell people to eat more carbs
  • Dietician was found not guilty after 3 years of charges as he went again dietician guild liens
  • One patient: No more drugs, no more antibiotics, no inhaler, asthma gone, voice stronger
  • “Our bodies are perfect”
  • Outback Example: 11 diabetes on ketosis showed marked improvement
  • How could it be this simple?
