Regain Your Brain Documentary & Reversing Alzheimer’s – My Notes From Episode 5

We are led to believe that conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and brain shrinkage are irreversible – or at least this was the old belief. It’s good to know that there are pioneers in the field of brain health doing tremendous research in this field and more importantly, helping people achieve life transformative results and complete reversals. Ever since I read Grain Brain a few years ago, I discovered from Dr David Perlmutter (featured in this series) how chronic inflammation as a result of excessive modern grain consumption (along with a high poor carb and sugar diet) is one of the leading causes of neurodegenerative decline / brain health decline. With over 30 years experience of helping his clients with all kinds of brain health problems, I can’t wait to see his interview on Day 11 of Regain Your Brain.

This is my write up for Episode 5 of Regain Your Brain with Functional Medicine Doctor, Dr Ross.

Day 05: Your Toxic Brain: How To Test For And Treat The Metals, Moulds, And Toxins Erasing Your Memory With Dr. Mary Kay Ross

  • Dr Ross is a physician turned Functional Medical doctor [Functional Medicine (FM) doctors help you get to the root cause of your health challenge rather than treat the symptom of it.]
  • Dr Ross talked about Toxic Mould Inhalation – how this is a leading cause of Alzheimer’s – called Inhalation Alzheimer’s.
  • In FM, they are trained to ask about your environment and exposures, both inside the body and outside
  • Mycotoxins are those created by toxic mould – they create inflammatory markers in the brain / cytokines. They can correlate exposure to toxins with these markers
  • A definitive demonstration of Alzheimer’s is plaques in the brain. They say the body creates these plaques to protect you – yet Western medicine treats you with a drug to remove the plaque – ignoring what caused the plaque [the same argument is put forward about most forms of cancer – it’s a symptom of toxicity in the body and is a symptom sending a message to the person to make some changes]
  • Step 1: Eliminate exposure to the toxins. One way is to use a “binder” – and this is sometimes in the form of a drug that attaches itself to the toxin and escorts it out of the body
  • Dr Ritchie Shoemaker is a Biotoxin pioneer
  • Dr Ross talked about many happy outcomes of people reversing Alzheimer’s using this method alone
  • Step 2: Refuel the brain
    • Nutraceuticals
    • High Fat diet to refuel the brain
    • Methylation detoxification pathways. When these are not functioning properly they need stimulating and bringing back to working order
    • Thorn – opens up methylation pathways
    • Curcumin and More supplements to support this method
      • 1800 mg per day
      • B-Vitamins (high dosage)
    • Intravenous Glutathione – Glutathione is the body’s most powerful antioxidant. If this is depleted (and normally is due to imbalances) the body responds well to glutathione through IV
    • One example with a person who regrew her hippocampus (part of the brain responsible for memory) by a third within a few months (from 10->22, highest is 30)
    • Infrared Sauna was featured in the protocol  – click this video to learn more about that. It’s a really powerful way to get the detoxification pathways open – through helping the body to sweat with infrared wavelengths and reversing inflammation in the process. Light is a nutrient!
    • 70% of Alzheimer’s patients display inflammatory markers related to Mycotoxins.
    • Lyme disease is a biotoxin – a living toxin, so must be healed / escorted out of the body
    • Changes can happen in as little as 1 month, with huge results from 6 months to a year
    • Other factors:
      • Brain exercises using apps
      • Exercising the body to stimulate BDNF – the protein and intelligence of the cells. [You can quite literally improve your intelligence by exercising, no matter how old you are.]
      • MITO diet from Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM)
      • Support is really important particularly with the spouse who can help lay out the protocol – including supplements / diet / brain games / mindfulness & stress reduction etc
      • Sleep is very important, high quality and uninterrupted.
    • In 98% of cases, memory comes back and people become functional again
    • Dr Dale Bredeson is whom she learned from and talks about 9 in 10 cases complete reversal. On his site has a list of physicians trained in this protocol.
    • Lastly – hormones and how they play a huge part. With men, Testosterone = Memory. If hormones are out of balance due to their bodies being out of balance, this immediately harms brain health and memory.
    • Cortisol (the stress hormone) ravages brain health and memory
