Day 4 of Ketosis – I’ve Gone Purple.

Today marks the fourth day of my “journey” into the crazy world of ketosis. Day 3 is here. I say journey, as it has its ups and downs; it can introduce various forms of pain into your life – like dizziness, inability to think clearly, headaches, severe hunger pangs, and make you a little sketchy on your feet. However, once you’re in fully fledged ketosis, you’re in 24/7 fat burning mode, you can think like a superhuman and your energy levels rise.

Recap: Ketosis is when you burn ketone bodies derived from stored fat instead of glucose from carbohydrates. It’s one of the fastest ways to burn fat fast without depriving yourself of much. In the Facebook live video I just screened I mentioned that you don’t deprive yourself of anything. That’s not strictly true – whilst you’ve still able to have lots of micronutrients (your vitamins and minerals), there are a number of them you can’t have as they would knock you out of ketosis – like beetroots and carrots for example. To get sufficient micronutrients across the board, we ought to be really ‘eating the rainbow’ – something form every colour of vegetable every day, to supply sufficient vitamins and minerals. We absolutely must be getting these regularly to support the immune system.

In addition to that, in ketosis you can’t have any fruit, so whilst fruit is high in fructose, fruit comes with a plethora of health benefits – namely the vitamins and minerals. I therefore don’t consider this to be a lifestyle choice. More, an experiment to see how fast one can burn fat.

I’ve found the transition pretty smooth so far. Day’s one and two were the hardest. Actually day one was by far the hardest. I had a headache for most of the day and Tuesday as well.

Morning routine:

15 minute meditation and breathing exercises. No workout today. I killed my legs last night and my upper body in my 25 minute session of pushups, lunges and plank. I started the day off with 2 pints of high quality water, one with a quarter of a lemon squeezed in to cleanse the liver and other organs. This was followed by green tea and then French Press coffee an hour or so later.

Lunch

IMG_8174I broke my fast at 1pm today, which was not a full 16 hours unfortunately. I had to break it at 2am as I couldn’t sleep on a very empty stomach and overactive mind. This is a side effect of not having carbs in an evening meal.  My lunch today comprised 3 eggs in coconut oil and avocado in a hurry to rush out the door for an event all afternoon.

Dinner

To your right is a picture of my exciting dinner. Imagine this was in a burrito. It’s a burrito in a box, without the burrito. Despite how unappealing it looks, it was actually tasty. Free ranch Chicken from Whole Foods (not organic unfortunately) with greens, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, cooked peppers. One of the greatest challenges so far is finding food to eat out that doesn’t knock you out of ketosis – namely, anything that isn’t high glycemic (high GI) that spikes blood sugar.

I also found it remarkably easy to say no to treats at an awesome workshop I went to in the afternoon.

Side Effects: No headache today, was able to focus well this morning and all afternoon at a workshop. This evening my energy has been through the floor but I think that’s down to concentrating so hard and a lack of sleep the previous night.

I’m also moving down the keto stick towards there being moderate amounts of ketones! Soon my body will be in full ketosis. Happy days! Fat burning 24-7.
