Do you ever wonder why we have an obesity epidemic on our hands that wasn’t with us 100 years ago? If you’re one to suffer from fat fluctuations, you’ll be happy to hear, it is not your fault. The reason people get fat is not just down to calories in, versus calories out – namely, burn off what you can consume and if you consume more than you burn off, then you’ll gather fat. If it were that simple, I really don’t think we’d have this problem on our hands which is linked to all sorts of other problems, namely Type 2 Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer to name but a few of the many associated serious health problems and diseases.
There is one common theme among my most recent research and that is that many people who suffer from excess fat gain have lost control of their fat-burning hormone, insulin. This is a hormone that is secreted from the pancreas to extract excess blood sugar from blood as a result of the consumption of sugar and high starch carbohydrates. It then stores this excess glucose as fat. A book I read recently called The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson helped to just package all of my research into one easily digestible format (no pun intended). Everything just became blatantly clear. The modern day diet or Standard American Diet (SAD) which comprises mostly of heavily processed and refined carbohydrates and sugars, leads people down the path of becoming insulin resistant as opposed to being insulin sensitive as we were designed to be. This leads to obesity and Diabetes and has a knock on effect with other hormones, including testosterone.
In the Primal Blueprint, Mark Sisson goes into detail about how our our diet has changed considerably compared with our ancestors 10,000 years ago, before the start of the agriculture industry and the introduction of grains. What made complete sense is that our genes have not adapted to digestive grains and gluten (which is the main ‘poison’ in the grain) which leads to people getting diagnosed with Celiac Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and skin problems to name but a few of many serious health conditions. The scary thing is that people with any of these conditions are just lead to believe that that’s life and they need to live with it. Simply put, if we remove grains and therefore wheat from our diets and high starch carbohydrates and sugar, we can solve many health problems completely naturally without the use of drugs. It takes a few weeks to adjust but I’ve experienced first hand how fat just drops off when avoiding all types of grain-based foods and foods with high sugar content. Not only do grains induce a high blood sugar spike, leading to an injection of insulin, but they cause inflammation in the body.
The beauty is you can try this for yourself and completely safely. Instead of having a cereal based breakfast or bread, have a 3 egg omelette made from organic eggs, with vegetables such as an onion, mushrooms, broccoli and spinach, with avocado and tomato on the side. That’s what I eat for breakfast every morning and it literally keeps hunger locked up until lunch. (Instead of white potatoes, go with sweet potatoes or yams as they induce a far lesser blood sugar response). My blood sugar remains stable, I don’t experience an energy high, then the low that quickly follows normally. I’m also feeding my body with protein, a low dosage of carbohydrates from the vegetables to feed my brain with enough glucose so I can function perfectly, and also fat and fibre.
This is a glimpse of what you’ll read in The Primal Blueprint and I wholeheartedly recommend a read. It’s no temporary diet; it’s a lifestyle choice that will encourage you to burn fat fast and painlessly (with moderate exercise of course – there’s no getting around that – our bodies were designed to move – if we don’t strengthen our bodies, they weaken, it’s a fact of life – if any living thing doesn’t grow, it dies.) We can get all the energy we need from a wheat-free diet that only birds should be consuming and can go primal by eating animal, fish, fruit and vegetables. Other than that, anything that’s processed or refined is going to cause problems. Doesn’t that make total sense? Don’t buy anything in a box, stick to organic as possible, go natural and not only will you enjoy your food but you’ll be full of beans (both mentally and physical) meaning improvements in every other area of your life too.
