Sometimes I just love articles like the one I’m about to feature, that present health and fitness in a no BS kind of way. A lot of people ask if you can lose fat with diet alone. The truth is, that you can but what will also happen is that you’ll lose muscle too and slow down your metabolism and then you’ll end up putting the fat back on as you can’t sustain the “diet”. A far better option is to make simple changes to your lifestyle that involve moving and strengthening your body and working it every day so it grows and you work all vital organs, muscles and bones so you maintain physical fitness to improve all aspects of your life.
A simple rule of the universe is that if any living thing doesn’t grow, it dies. Older people tend to age far quicker than they should, because they don’t work their bodies and vital organs – their heart and lungs, brains, and all muscles and bones. Rather they adopt the modern day lifestyle of practically no movement and wonder why they’re weak and feeble with back problems at a relatively young age.
I went kite surfing yesterday and saw people in their 60s jumping waves and living the life of a 25 year old. As I was being overtaken by them at the tender age of 34, this thought came into my head: People often ask me if you have to be strong and physically fit to kitesurf. My response is always ‘you don’t have to be that strong, but you need to be fit’ – and I’m always left wondering why people ask if you have to be fit. Surely to get the most out of life, you need to be physically fit, otherwise you put your health in jeopardy – and you only get one life. You also limit the quality of your life in almost every area – not just amazing sports and experiences you’ll be put off doing, but your mental and physical energy will suffer, as will your sex life, your relationships, your ‘working’ life, your willingness to explore new things etc. Anyway, enough about that, let’s take a look at this awesome and brief article from Jason Ferruggia.com…
What you shove down your pie hole is the single most important factor relating to fat loss. Diet, diet, diet. That should be your focus.
You could do nothing but get up and go to work each morning, come home, sit on the couch and repeat. And still lose a significant amount of bodyfat if you’re eating properly.
But that is the worst message in the world to be promoting. I hate it more than people texting at the dinner table. I loathe it.
It’s that oafish, unathletic, unfit 80’s bodybuilder type of mindset.
The word fitness has been bastardized unmercifully. Most people have completely forgotten the true meaning of the term.
Fitness is about strength, mobility, and endurance. It’s about athleticism and being able to move freely without pain. To be fit you should be able to pick up something heavy but also jump into a pickup game or go for a long hike without having to dial 911.
If there’s one thing you can take away from this article, it’s that you can lose fat through diet alone, but by doing so, you’ll limit almost every other area for the rest of your life. Nuff said!
