I’m fortunate enough to be living in LA right now where practically everyone has heard of Bulletproof Coffee and the word is spreading fast. It is the brainchild of biohacker, Dave Asprey. Bulletproof coffee is high grade, organic, free of performance-robbing and mojo-sabotaging toxins (mould toxins). In addition to that, it consists of ‘Brain Octane’ which is coconut oil and palm oil fused together and a chunk of organic, grass-fed butter that would easily cover several slices of toast (wheat-free of course). By the way, for clarification, grass-fed butter doesn’t mean the butter has been fed grass, it means the cows from which it is made, have been grass-fed, silly. You chuck it all in a blender and it’s served frothy and sweet.
All this fat, helps you to burn fat, and build muscle, which I’ll come onto in just a second. Firstly, let’s see how it affects the brain. Putting it simply, the theory is this: Caffeine helps us to concentrate and perform better. Unfortunately, many types of coffee are highly toxic as they’ve been exposed to all kinds of chemicals during the processing of the beans. You’ll typically experience a high, then a crash. (This is apparently the toxins, not the caffeine itself. If you have tons of sugar in it, that’ll make you crash too.) For that reason, I stick to organic coffee beans as much as possible. Bulletproof coffee takes it a few steps further, so it’s some of the purest coffee you can buy. And yes, I do believe this.
Secondly, our brains cells are made from 70% fat. Our brains require fat, to fuel their cells. In fact, 50% of every other cell in our body is made up of fat too – so dietary fat is a critical component of our diet. Fat is essential for testosterone production too and hormone regulation among many other functions. (Sadly, conventional wisdom doesn’t teach us this and we’re led to believe we should be consuming very low fat diets, and lots of carbs which cause blood sugar spikes and insulin surges (which leads to type-2 diabetes), fat retention and I’ve recently discovered, having read Grain Brain, that this leads to neurodegenerative decline (brain health deterioration). The typical how a low fat, high carb (and sugar) diet, is what leads to almost all neurodegenerative diseases according to Grain Brain. It starves the brain of critical fuel and the consistent insulin surges, leads to insulin resistance, which leads to inflammation and that leads to practically every chronic disease you can think of.
Back to Bullet Proof coffee. The fat from the butter and ‘Brain Octane’ help with brain performance and it slows the rate at which your body absorbs the caffeine too. The brain octane provides essential fats and David Asprey, the creator, claims Brain Octane is 18x stronger than standard coconut oil. Coconut oil, by the way, is very powerful for your brain. Here’s how Brain Octane works:
Brain octane rapidly metabolizes into ketones, providing almost instant energy to the brain without requiring glucose from dietary sugars or carbohydrates. This makes it the top choice for reaching peak brain performance all day, especially during demanding tasks or during Bulletproof® Intermittent Fasting. Brain Octane also has potent anti-microbial effects that help to support healthy digestion and immune function.
Brain Octane™ Oil may provide the following benefits:
- Fast energy for the brain – Brain Octane converts into energy faster than other fats or oils*
- Fuels a starved brain – Brain Octane delivers much needed ketones to fuel a starved brain that can no longer efficiently metabolize glucose for energy*
- Reduces brain fog – Slaughters the gut yeast, candida, responsible for producing 180+ toxic chemicals in the blood stream*
- Rebalancing of yeast in gut – Brings candida into balance
- Does NOT increase blood cholesterol – Metabolized differently than other types of fat*
- Make meals more Bulletproof – Flavorless and easy to add into diet. Mix into any smoothie, soup, sushi, coffee or most recipes, for more intense mental activity
- Flavorless and odorless to add to any liquid or food*
- Easy Storage – No refrigeration required and liquid at room temperature
- Replaces far more expensive versions – Brain Octane is only 25% the cost of weaker Caprylic Acid capsules ($1.07 per oz. versus $3.78 per oz) Continue reading here
You don’t crash and you can focus for hours without having food cravings. I’ve been drinking it for several weeks now and from personal experience, I can tell you that it works. I suffer from ADHD to a certain extend and I’ve even tried ADHD medication. It made me feel jittery and I didn’t like it at all. I hate putting any drug in my system as every single drug, bar none, has side effects. If you do take any kind of medication for focus, I’d suggest giving bulletproof a go.
Last but not least, since it’s giving you a nice amount of healthy, dietary fat, you can use Bulletproof coffee to help burn body fat used in conjunction with Intermittent Fasting. After 12 hours of fasting, you start to burn fat for energy. Most people consume breakfast to “kick start their metabolism” with a “healthy wholegrain” high carb breakfast. This shoots your insulin through the roof, causing you to store fat, and you experience an energy crash soon afterward and will often struggle to focus. With Bulletproof coffee, it’s far easier to continue the fast beyond that magical 12 hour mark and burn body fat, ideally, for another 4 hours so you reach 16 hours in fat burning mode, nutritional ketosis. You’ll be using ketones in stored fat for fuel (both for your brain and your other cells). In Grain Brain, Dr Perlmutter actually describes ketones as a super food for the brain. If you’ve ever fasted for longer than 3 days, be it a juice cleanse or otherwise, you’ll have experienced this.
Oh, and it’s super tasty too. No need for sugar or sweeteners. For more information on Bulletproof coffee, visit this site.
